Bird Fair 2014

This year proved another success for Twootz at the Annual Bird Fair! We met several customers – new and old, and enjoyed being involved with all the activity the fair had to offer. We were pitched in Marquee 8 – did you see us? The weather held with only a little rain on Sunday, but for the most part it was beautifully blue and sunny skies! The atmosphere was brilliant, birders young and old “flocking” to all the marquees taking full advantage of the great offers and freebies ...

What would you say if I told you prehistoric birds knew how to fly before they ever got off the ground? I know, it makes no sense, but according to researchers in the US, the "first bird", the Archaeopteryx, may not have been as special as we previously thought. Using CT scanners and all manner of technical wizardry, scientists have mapped out the skulls and brains of modern birds and located the unique characteristics, the neural programming if you will, that lets them fly. Our friend ...

Bird Watching in Deepest West Sussex From David Cole

Not the prettiest resident in our garden is old Bufo bufo – the common toad. We have lived here now for about forty years, and the common toad can live to be more than 40yrs of age so there is a good chance that they were here as individuals before we were. They are treated with respect and considerable thanks for the pest control work which they undertake. I’m sure that much of our vegetable garden would be devastated were it not for the toads in the raised beds – each one see ...

Bats are very much a mixed blessing – conservation organizations wax lyrical over the joys of these mystical little creatures – but I doubt if the enthusiasm would be as vocal if the bearded, sandaled ones had a roost in their own domestic roofs. The little beasts enthusiastically urinate and defecate throughout many lofts creating a strong stench, and little drowned bodies can sometimes be found in your domestic water tanks – and that is where the water that you use to clean your ...

It is all a question of live and let live as far as the Wood Pigeons go. Their annual foray into the large trees at the edge of the garden always coincides with the thrusting through of the first vegetable garden seedlings. Your average courting Wood Pigeon (Columba palumbus – also called Woodpigeon without the hyphen) has a voracious appetite and they will completely destroy the gardener’s hard work in a quick morning visit. A friend, who is a keen exhibitor at the local Flow ...

From deepest, darkest West Sussex by David Cole

It is currently birdwatcher’s hell here in West Sussex – murder most foul is to be seen in every hedgerow. Confined by circumstance to the curtilage of my home near Petworth, the carnage is not pleasant to behold – but after all isn’t there something about “Nature, red in tooth and claw...” Tennyson I’m pretty sure… Magpies, crows, rooks and woodpeckers search the hedges for nests of young birds to provide an easy and rich protein feast for themselves and their own yo ...

A Northumberland Bird Watching Experience

In July 2012 we spent a week in Beadnell on the coast of Northumberland. The village is close to a large colony of Arctic Terns which flew continuously over the holiday cottage we stayed in. The cottage had a great view of Beadnell bay and many birds were seen from the balcony including Heron, Arctic Tern, Common Tern, Eider, Redshank, Gannet, and several garden birds including Song Thrush, Linnet, Blackbird, Goldfinch, House Sparrow and Great Tit. For much of the time the weather inland ...

Yorkshire based Twootz.com has seen its bird food sales increase rapidly over its three month existence on the web.
