The enthusiastic
robin in the picture, hanging on as if his life depended on, it was experiencing the high winds of winter – but a tight grip is not the only protection these little
bird-table favourites have.
The over sized version is showing the puffed-up protection which the
robin (and other birds) use to give them cold weather help. They erect their
feathers and in so doing trap air thus giving them added protection against the cold.
However, without the
high quality bird foods which bird lovers all over the country put out for them vast numbers would die in the bleak winter months. Berries are pretty plentiful this year but they don’t last long into the cold months and good feeding with plenty of fat and protein will help these tiny creatures to weather the cold months.
One great things with
Robins is that the boys and girls look the same so you can always be ‘right’ when talking about your feathered visitors and he/she will be grateful for the
food – in this case
fat balls which are ideal for winter snacking!
