For many people, summer is the best time of the year as the cold, miserable weather is replaced by sunshine, warm temperatures and outdoor life springs into action again.

As summer has arrived and the weather is warming up, there is nothing more refreshing than drinking a tall glass of ice water. However, many people do not realise that clean, fresh water is as important to birds and other wildlife as it is for humans. Not only that, but birds actually enjoy splashing around in the water just like we do.

Along with food, shelter and a place to nest, water is one of the most important resources birds’ need. To create a quick and easy bird-friendly habitat, simply put out a bird feeder, hang a bird house, provide some nesting materials, and most importantly a bird bath.

The important thing to remember is to try and leave plenty of open space around the bird bath so that birds are able to see any predators lurking nearby. The best place would be near a perch, a small open tree or trellis as this allows birds to scan the area from high up before diving down into the water bath.

Many birds will visit to your bath for water they need for both drinking and grooming. Whilst there they will also hunt for worms, insects and seeds they like to eat. In doing this they will also groom dead plants, help aerate the soil, and devour pests.
